The immune system is a complex network of\u00a0<strong>various organs<\/strong>, cell types, and molecules.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Innate immune defense:<\/strong>It originated very early in human evolution and has been preserved almost unchanged. In addition, we develop an adaptable\u00a0<strong>(adaptive) immune defense<\/strong>that protects us even more specifically from pathogens. It is estimated that about 90 percent of all\u00a0<strong>infections<\/strong>\u00a0can be recognized and successfully fought by the innate immune defense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The components of the immune system are:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Mechanical barriers that are intended to prevent pathogens from entering (e.g., nasal mucosa).<\/li>\n<li>Cells, such as granulocytes, natural killer cells (<strong>NK cells)<\/strong>or<strong>T lymphocytes<\/strong>They are partially grouped into specialized organs (\u2192 Lymphatic system).<\/li>\n<li>Proteins that serve as messengers or for defense against pathogens.<\/li>\n<li>Psychological immune factors.<\/li>\n<li>Intestinal infection defense through present bacteria (intestinal flora), transport function through constant emptying, and the so-called gut-associated immune system (GALT = Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue) and antibacterial proteins.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A\u00a0<strong>macrophage<\/strong>\u00a0takes up an antigen to then present it to a T helper cell. This then initiates the adaptive immune response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Macrophages<\/strong>\u00a0(giant phagocytic cells) also form part of the immune system's patrol. Macrophages mature\u00a0<strong>from monocytes<\/strong>\u00a0(mononuclear white blood cells = mononuclear\u00a0<strong>leukocytes<\/strong>that leave the bloodstream. Macrophages reside in the tissue, where they recognize and phagocytize invading pathogens. If the pathogens cannot be fought by macrophages alone, macrophages can activate the adaptive immune defense. To do this, the captured parts of the pathogens inside the macrophages are broken down into individual\u00a0<strong>peptides (epitopes)<\/strong>\u00a0and presented on the surface by\u00a0<strong>MHC-II<\/strong>\u00a0molecules.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The antigens can only be recognized by T helper cells, which then initiate an adaptive immune response that ultimately leads to the destruction of the pathogen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Macrophages also play a decisive role in combating and eliminating harmful substances and waste products (such as tar from cigarette smoke in the lungs), which is why they are occasionally referred to as the \"body's garbage collectors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Natural killer cells<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">NK cells are the first line of defense in the fight against infections and cancer because they can destroy infected cells without having been in contact with the pathogen itself beforehand. T cells carry a\u00a0<strong>T-cell receptor<\/strong>\u00a0on their surface, with which each T cell can recognize a specific antigen<strong>(lock-and-key principle<\/strong>). The\u00a0<strong>T helper cells<\/strong>\u00a0coordinate the immune response. Diseased cells cause the T helper cell to divide and release its messengers, which cause the infected or diseased cell to die (a process called\u00a0<strong>apoptosis<\/strong>programmed cell death).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>B lymphocytes<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>B-cells<\/strong>\u00a0transforms after\u00a0<strong>contact with antigenes<\/strong>\u00a0to a\u00a0<strong>plasma cell<\/strong>that creates specific\u00a0<strong>antibodies<\/strong>\u00a0B lymphocytes also belong to the\u00a0<strong>leukocytes (white blood cells)<\/strong>. The term \"B cells\" originally referred to their formation site in the\u00a0<strong>Bursa<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Fabricii<\/strong>\u00a0in birds.\u00a0<strong>In mammals,<\/strong>\u00a0B cells, like all other immune cells, originate in the\u00a0<strong>bone marrow.<\/strong>Unlike T cells, B cells are able to recognize free antigens and eliminate them in an immune reaction; they develop an immune memory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Humoral components\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The humoral components of the immune system (from Latin \"humor\" meaning fluid) refer to various\u00a0<strong>plasma proteins<\/strong>that circulate passively in the blood, lymph, and tissue fluid.
